The Great Indian Cultures @ Gurukul

.…….Their was almost no role of parents in educating their children, they total dependent on society. Thus they get natural feeling to give back to the society and serve the society with selflessness………

In ancient times Gurukul were the main institutions where students go for formal studies. The Gurukul was based on great concept where learning and student teacher relationship was a priority. When teacher and students are in best mutual understanding then a student can learn easily and teacher can groom students in very effective way.

This learning system was designed with great thoughts and research. Gurukul system was developed aiming to create great citizens for the society.

Gurukul features:

Here one thing is very important to note that all section of the society were goes to Gurukul for the compulsory education.

Certainly there are few exceptions i.e. of great Eklavya and Karna is present in our history but this was the time of Mahabharata, where the caste system was getting rooted. But before that time the caste system was not persisted in the society. The caste system was dominated in the POST VEDIC PERIOD.

So the most important thing of the Gurukul System were :

1.   Compulsory education to all irrespective of class, social and financial status of the students and parents.

2.   Up to age group of 24 year can bet education.

3.   The girls also get education parallel with boys.

4.   The society directly nurtures the students, as a result the students when become mature then they serve the society by feeling grateful to society.

5.   The students get the practical knowledge of complexity of society as they have to go out every day to villages and towns for begging. Lard Rama taken education by begging even he was Prince of a Great Kingdom.

6.   The education was mainly given of the Dharma, Vedas, Shastra (Known science) such as Astrology, space science, commerce and weapon education, medicines (Ayurveda) etc.

Designing concept of Gurukul:Through this system learning was designed in such a way so the students can get deep knowledge of social structures along with routine studies. To interact with society the students have to go every day to the nearby villages and towns for begging. And from these the collected alms they run livelihood of Gurukul including teacher.

When the students goes to for begging they gets opportunity to be in contact with society. As a result from childhood to maturity the students keep on understanding the complexity of society. So finally when they come out from the Gurukul they become mature enough to understand the requirements of people, daily events, evils etc.

Concept of Begging during study period: The concept of begging was designed, by keeping in mind that students could understand that whatever they are, and what they would be in future that is because of society which contributed to their livelihood, survival and finally education(by alms given by outside people, the students completes their studies during Gurukul life). Their was almost no role of parents in educating their children, they total dependent on society. Thus they get natural feeling to give back to the society and serve the society with selflessness.

Important feature in begging:The begging was easy because when a student goes to a door for the begging then the women in that concern house rushes eagerly to give alms to that student, because she feels that her child is also begging somewhere. So the students get love and care from each house in the society. No one ignore them.

Outcome of Gurukul system: Every person in the society once passed though Gurukul system so they understand deeply the contribution of society in their life. And when they get any role in society (such as service) they play it well with honesty. For example when he becomes king then he tries to serve the society by doing his best possible.

Current education system and Gurukul: Current education system is a commercial system and some of the schools and most of the colleges are working as corporate houses, where delivering education is only for generating business not for the real outcome or theme of education. Here the discrimination is largely involved which is on the basis of financial condition of the parents. And some of the schools in the Metros and in small cities too are taking parents interview for the admission of children.

Compulsory education is right of children but it depends on the financial condition of parents, as in BPL families the children also going for the labor to earn money.

Society directly does not contribute any positive role in nurturing a child or students. That’s why students and people after getting college and school education don’t find any reason to why they have to serve the society. Differing from the current practice of education system a Gurukul system was designed to provide education to all.

Exceptions/Black  holes: During Vedic period the caste system was not prevalent in the society, it was only Brahmins and non Brahmins. After Vedic period the caste system becomes prominent. And the exception about discriminations in the Gurukuls on the caste basis was only noted during post Vedic period.
